I was standing this afternoon looking down at a print-out of our marriage license application on the wood-grain counter of the Elkhart County clerk’s office.
After verifying that neither of us were mentally ill, the clerk asked us a number of questions, starting with Marnell.
“What is your gender?”
“Where were you born?”
“Where does your father live now?”
“Your mother is still living?”
“Yes,” Marnell said.
Funny how in the throes of an exciting time, unexpected emotions can appear out of nowhere, and suddenly I am the girl whose mother died and won’t be making it to the wedding.
Funny that this happened there in the factual world of files and Bic pens, and creaking wooden floors and metal detectors, and not yesterday when the choir was singing “He Giveth More Grace”, in memory of my mom.
“Sorrows come to stretch the places in our hearts for joy”… perhaps the poet was right!
12 Days!
And we ended the afternoon with fish tacos…

I love that you got the Christmas wreath on the lamp post in the picture of the court house. Exciting times! I wish that you could’ve said yes to that question.
Me too, and for the same lady… only my time is pretty predictable when the blue hydrangea bush comes poking up through the spring soil.
Aww… thank you for sharing!
Katrina, although she may not physically be there your mom will be watching over you as she has every day since her journey to Heaven. I am a believer of Angels choosing who to place in our lives, and that Marnell is Elsie’s choice for you. Cardinals are said to be our loved ones coming back to us in our time of need, but I also believe they come at the special times in our lives. I will be thinking of you & Marnell as these last days of being single fly by (and they will!), and on your wedding day I will pray for you and your marriage and that you see cardinals (lots of them!) Wishing you many blessings! ~ Carol
Beautiful thoughts Carol! Thank you so much for sharing, especially since you knew her!
