Welcome to my new blog site! I’m glad I have something to give away on this festive occasion. Many thanks to Reuben Hochstetler for assisting me with the blog setup.
In the spirit of my 500 Fund, the DVD set I am giving away today is one I received as a gift a few days ago from speaker and missionary pastor Rick Rhodes. (The winner will get their own copy. I’m not giving up mine!)
I don’t know Rick personally, and he doesn’t know me. However, several years ago I listened to him present a series he titled Sold Out at a youth rally. He’s a gifted speaker, and he communicated very well that God has a plan for everyone who is surrendered and faithful. Out of the despair and desperation I felt in life at that time, I found him after the service (prompted by something he said in the message). Don’t you think it’s possible, I asked him, for a person to ruin their chance to be used of God? Don’t you think a person can get to the place where it’s too late? Tears streamed down my face.
I don’t remember everything he said, but I specifically remember three words.
“You’re not there,” he said.
As God met me through the next years, I told many people about the short lifeline message Rick had given me.
Three years after our conversation (meaning a few weeks ago) I was thinking of some of the people and situations I have been praying for. Maybe God will answer some of my prayers years from now, I mused. Wouldn’t it be nice if we could always see the effect we have on other people? But we can’t.
With this idea in mind, however, I decided to send a message to Rick Rhodes, who now lives with his family in Thailand. “I don’t know if you remember me…” I began. I thanked him for his words three years before. He replied, thanked me for sharing, and said he would send me a copy of Sold Out.
Well…how does God know us so well? When Sold Out arrived on my Brady Street porch, I was battling a despair that I hadn’t felt in a long time.
“God,” I whined from the comfort of my loveseat, feet propped on the downstream arm, “things are so bad. I have no idea what to do. It’s just worse than I ever imagined.”
I had already popped the Sold Out DVD into my computer. I went to Session Two and began listening.
Rick Rhodes spoke about Moses at the burning bush, when God asked him to go back to Egypt and lead the people.
I guess I never noticed before how many inches of the Exodus pages are devoted to Moses’ argument with God. The burning bush story takes up an entire page and a half in my Bible, and most of it is Moses whining and God responding to him.
In a moment of humor, Rick suggests that after all that whining, Moses deserved to hear God say, “If you want to spend the rest of your life chasing sheep in the desert, go for it.” Who wants a whiner? But God had already decided this was Moses’ job, and that was that.
After complaining awhile, Moses said, “The people won’t believe me. They won’t listen.”
Rick says, with eloquent sarcasm, “God said to Moses, ‘Oh, thanks, I never thought of that.'”
I stared at my computer screen, just twenty feet from the piece of furniture where I was whining to God so shortly before.
God knew what challenges Moses would face before he asked him to do the job.
He knew what I would face too.
It was as if I was trying to clue God in on how bad things were, and he already knew, months ago, what I would face.
He knew, through the good days and bad days, through my faithfulness or the time I disobeyed Him, that I would come to this terribly hard place.
And he asked me to proceed anyway, already knowing.
“God isn’t in the habit of asking people to do things that they can do in their own strength,” Rick says.
That one is easy to believe! Nothing could be more clear to me!
