- The English language everywhere, the chicken nuggets I ate at the O’Hare airport, and a sickness-free and safe flight home. I didn’t vomit once on about a 12 hour flight, which I think is a pretty clear record. I even ate the little airplane meal, which I hardly ever get to do, because I’m nauseated… It was so fun to lift the tin foil lid off the chicken, and unwrap the little spoon and fork package.
- My co-worker Sue so kindly offered to work extra for me tomorrow so I can recover a bit longer.
- My three friends (who own that couch I may have told you about) came to pick me up at 11:30pm, even though they all had to work today, since I missed the first bus that was supposed to get me to South Bend at 9:00pm. They even bought a few groceries for my refrigerator.
- My neighbor watered my flowers while I was gone, so all my geraniums are beautiful!
- My friend Rosetta, still in Jordan, text me encouragement throughout the morning, which gave me a feeling of sitting on her rooftop with all of Amman beneath us.
I further comforted myself with an American cup of coffee, and wrapped myself in an Arabic scarf, and began to read (from the back of the book) this:
I know it’s no different than reading an English New Testament, because I certainly don’t understand the column on the right, but it just felt warm and friendly, like the people in the Middle East, to have those words there.
But what really reminded me that God cares about the little things, including our unspoken prayers…when I delivered baklava to the hospital today, one of the doctors said “Shukran” to me (the Arabic word for “thank you”). I didn’t even know he spoke it (and he said he doesn’t really). But I was just pleased to hear some Arabic, and a bit smug that I understood!
God knows not only what we need, but even the little things we might want as well! He is so good.
