An artery, a winter storm, and a third powerful thing

I’ve been sick the last few days, a cycle of sneezing and sleeping.  I thought if I waited to go to the grocery store until 10pm Saturday night, I would miss the crowd.

No.

Not the night before the BIG STORM and the Super Bowl.

So, I stood in line at Meijer, not writing my Saturday night blog.

Before that, I sat by aunt’s fireplace, not writing it either.

But I’m thinking, through the fog of sneezing and sleeping…. Thinking of two powerful things I witnessed this week, and a third…

“Show Katrina the pressure,” the surgeon said as I watched from behind cap and mask.  The assistant unclamped the small artery for a second. Bright red blood shot in an arc through the air, splattering his blue gown.

He knew it was there beneath the clamp, because he knows the power of the heart.

Winter storm watch, the weatherman said days ago.  And sure enough, on schedule, the heavy blue cloud appears on the radar.  On schedule (meaning a few hours late), the snow begins to fall.

They knew it was there over the Rockies days ahead, because they know the power of a storm system.

And I’m thinking of a third powerful thing, that lies latent and unknown sometimes…the answers to our prayers.

Yet we know they are coming, if we know the power of God.

The answer may still be over the Rockies, or still restrained by a clamp.  The answer may not meet our predictions with complete certainty.   It may not come on our timing.  It may splash all over our gown.

But, just as surely as Dr. Halloran knows his artery or the National Weather Service knows their radar, God knows his people’s prayers.

He will answer on time, in the right place, and with power.
